How do i replace an image file with another image file

Hello,

Now that i have much better digital photographs of the paintings displayed on the website with the RSGallery2 module (most recent version), i would like to refer from the existing image descriptions to the new files.
As a superuser i have all the necessary rights.
I can upload the new files into the correct map on the server.
I can depublish the item i want to edit (i.e. change the image file that is connected to that description).
What i need to know is how can i delete the link to the old image file and connect a new image file to the same description? Do i need to replace the original item entirely?
Can you help me with some tips?
