Title: Slow Gallery with many Photos
Post by: Oliver Rick on June 12, 2007, 06:53:41 PM
Hi everyone,

I've installed the RSGallery2 on a big CommunityPage.
We have over 7000 Pictures in about 120 Galleries.

I've noticed that it takes a lot of time (about 8 sec.) when i click on the Main-Gallery-Overview.
When i open a single Gallery the Thumbnails appear directly and the Gallerysystem is very fast. But not the Main-Page.

To reduce the time to about 5 sec i've disabled the random thumbnail for every Gallery in the Overview. But i don't think that this is a very good solution. But commenting out the MySQL-Query for the random thumbnail gave me 3 secs.

Is there any better solution?

Greetings from Germany

P.S.: Sorry for my bad english  :(

your english is quite ok

how many galleries do you have on the main page?
do you use the limitbox?

Yes I tried using the Limitbox with 15 Gallerys, but its still the same.
I think the MySQL query for searching the rights Pictures for the right gallery from more than 7000 Pix / MySQLentries is what makes it so slow

But i like the RSGallery and its watermark-feature and i don't want to use any other gallery :)

If you usually have more than one concurrent visitor you should not be using the watermark feature at this time.  Wait for it to be rewritten.

Can you either post your website or PM it to Daniel or I?  Can you enable slow query logging to see if queries are the issue?

I don't see any thumbnails in the main gallery page.
Did you disable them completely?

You could always set a fixed thumbnail for each gallery.
This is configurable in the Manage Galleries area in the backend.

Have you tried that already?

Yes i disabled thumbnails completely.

As I said bevore: With Thumbnails it takes about 8 Sec. to open the Overview
Without (as it is now) it takes about 5 Sec. and for me its still too long :(

Turn them on for a day or so if you don't mind.  I would like to try a few things.

Oliver,

The point that I was trying to make, there are two options of displaying a thumbnail.
Default setting is a random thumbnail. This sets of a query every time the main page is requested.
You can also choose a dedicated thumbnail for every gallery. This means you select the image in the backend, and it will always show the same thumbnail. Use the Gallery thumbnail dropdown in the Edit gallery screen. This way, that image ID is part of the gallery object and the other query isn't used. Try setting that and see if that reduces time to load.

Okay, I tried setting it to a dedicated Thumbnail (what takes quite a long clicking-time for 122 Galleries), but i did not recude the time. (Don't wonder if you see a random Thumbnail i set it back to randomthumbnail after trying...)

See: I've i disable the complete thumbnail-thing it takes still about 5 sec. to load the page. So I have to search for the mistake not in the thumbnails but in the code which creates the Maingallery-page.
I think the MySQL DB has to search in over 7000 entries, which file belongs to the right Gallery. I think that is was takes qite a long time.

Has anybody else so many Pictures with RSGallery? Maybe someone could tell his expierences

Thanks for helping us troubleshoot this issue Oliver.  I do have a gallery with aprox 2500 pictures and it loads in less than 1.5 seconds.

We're going to build a sample gallery with 50000 images or so and do some speed analysis on it to see what we can find.  It will take a few weeks.

Hello Guys

I got a site with +/- 5000 images 5 main galleries and +/- 450 subgalleries, the link to the main gallery takes about 8 sec. like describe earlier. Just to inform you. Subgalleries opens in +/- 3 sec.

Regards
Hans

This started as a post in may 2007 which was about RSGallery2 1.x on Joomla 1.0.x... The dev team at that time had quite some experienced people on it, they created RSGallery 1 and 2. I'm sorry to say that I've never quite gotten to their skill level when I started working on RSGallery2 2.x (first only with bug fixes, then RSG2 3.x) and do not know where to start looking or how to improve loading time for this. However, I have two questions: 1. if you were to take a backup of your site, and remove RSG2 from it, is the problem then solved? and 2. debug can be enabled and that may give results in the time different things take to load, perhaps there is a clue in there? And, as always, the information asked here: http://www.rsgallery2.nl/rsgallery2_2.x_bugs_problems/posting_rules_16637.0.html is used as a starting point to look further.

Maybe i can give you the anavar link (http://www.johndillonpark.org/) over the e-mail.

I do use sub galleries.

Having that many photos will make the page load take ages right?

Hello Andres,

You did not specify how many pictures you have or gonna have.
You may check my website (the banner image is actual too big so don't count that one ;-)
For nearly ten years i add 25-50 images in one/two gallery/ies per month

This is a gallery with 127 images
http://vollmondlauf-hechingen.de/index.php/bildergallerie/gallery/169

The following is the overview page
http://vollmondlauf-hechingen.de/index.php/bildergallerie

The truth is that the gallery view is slower then it could be.
1) Too many code is loaded
2) Too many images in one server directory

This will change in the future
If you followed the development the last years you may
have experienced a big step to a faster backend.

Actually i add drag and drop upload in the backend and after
that will care for the features in the frontend

Hopefully i could help to answer your question
